The ouster of Cyrus Mistry from the TATA group and the festivities this year coincided. As I’m keen to learn how this mystery unfolds and becomes a case study, the HR professional within me reminded me of how our Vedas, scriptures talk about how we should lead our lives. I realized a lot of teachings are applicable to our workplaces as well. I should not have been surprised at this realization as after all, all organizations are nothing but an extension of how people live their lives outside of their homes. Though this write up may not throw light on the Mistry exit, I’m taking this opportunity to share a few of the behaviors below in context to Ramayana which definitely have an impact on an organization and it’s people. The HR Department often invests a lot of time and money trying to implement employee engagement efforts that will make their fellow colleagues happy. Moves such as celebrating festivals, organizing parties, installing table tennis tables etc. are designed to create positive energy. However, the problem is that happiness does not correlate with engagement.
